What Is Neck Pain?
Feelings and aches of discomfort in the general areas of the neck represents common symptoms of neck pain. Pain often results from abnormalities within the neck structure, most notably in the cervical vertebrae.
The Causes of Neck Pain
Neck pain can be induced by a variety of sources. These include trauma to the neck muscles, a herniated cervical disk, stress, awkward positioning during sleep, and extensive strain during keyboard usage. Constant neck pain often places increased stress in the surrounding region.
Symptoms
Common symptoms include headaches, pain throughout the shoulder and arm, reduced range of neck motion, a spastic gait, and muscle weakness in the legs.
Treatments
The best course to fight against neck pain is to stay active and ensuring proper posture and form. Neck collars should only be used as a temporary solution. Neck pain often disappears within a week, and should not be attributed to a serious illness. However, it is always a good idea to consult a doctor if the neck pain persists for a long period. Physical therapists such as chiropractors and physiotherapists can also provide additional helpful information.
Helpful neck stretches may limit the duration of neck pain. Sit in a neutral position and look straight ahead. Slowly, while keeping the rest of the body stable, tilt your neck to the left a few inches, and then tilt towards the right. Next, stretch your neck in a downwards direction, and hold for ten seconds.
Relief for neck pain can also be alleviated through temperature therapy. Apply heat and ice to the affected area for 10-15 minutes every couple of hours. Massaging the affected area helps as well. In cases of constant, unrelenting pain, consider taking anti-inflammatory medication.
Prevention
Continual, awkward positioning is a leading cause for neck pain. Throughout the day, take frequent breaks and stretch before resuming a given position. Perform proper lifting posture when carrying heavy loads—always lift with your legs and not with your back. Finally, avoid intense neck motions and reaching overhead for too long.
Proper sitting posture can help eliminate neck pain. Here are some helpful tips:
-Always make sure your eyes are level with the top of the computer screen.
-Try to eliminate tension within the wrist, and maintain a relaxed position.
-Adjust your chair so your spine maintains an S-shaped curve. Make sure the chair’s backrest snuggles
against the small of your back.
